This module is only offered as part of the University of Roehampton International Summer School. The general aim and intention of the Summer School Module is to provide a broad outline and introduction to the subject of Art Psychotherapy. In particular to reflect on the early developments of ideas associated with the unconscious by both psychoanalysis and contemporary artists and how this eventually contributes to the development of Art Psychotherapy. The module itself is highly 'experiential' in nature, however, we stress that it is not intended to provide 'therapy' as such to the participants. Here at Roehampton we consider that Art Psychotherapy is one of the 'Psychological Therapies' that share a platform with other cognate disciplines including Counselling, Psychology and Psychotherapy. We consider that Art Therapy is a specialized form of Psychotherapy and that it is largely underpinned by Psychoanalytical theories. This module is largely underpinned and informed by theories and models from Freud's original discipline of Psychoanalysis. The module timetable largely consists of short theory presentations, experiential workshops and seminars. In addition there are two educational visits, he first to the Freud Museum, the second to the National Gallery. This module is designed to provide an initial introduction to Art Psychotherapy and is designed to meet the needs of individuals serving a variety of purposes.

This module has been designed with ‘murder in mind’! Murder and why individuals commit such heinous crimes is a fascinating topic of study. Throughout history scholars have tried to understand the motivation behind taking another person’s life. The principle aim of this module is to introduce you to the psychology of murder. Initial sessions will provide a background through exploring the importance of psychology in the field of criminology and what exactly do we mean by murder. Our intellectual journey will then progress to delve into the most fascinating area of murders: the world of the serial killer, mass murderer and the growing issue of terrorism. From exploring actual crimes we will gradually build up a picture of the psychological motivations behind such serious crimes – are murderers mad, sad or bad? To further understand the motivation behind murder we will explore why certain victims are selected (female, homeless, children) and debate how such crimes should be punished in our society. The module will comprise lectures, workshops and debates as well as a walking tour of some of the famous London murder sites.
